Veneers are like ceramic shells that are used to improve the aesthetic appearance of teeth that show when we smile. These procedures are also known as smile makeovers. They provide aesthetic improvement (colour and shape) for worn enamel, cracks, chips and even for gaps between teeth. Discolouration of teeth can be caused by staining (medications, coffe, tea, cigarettes,coke) or chemical damage to the tooth. Genetic factors also play a role and sometimes underlying medical causes as well. They are usually made of porcelain and they are as translucent as natural teeth so they provide a natural look. They are shaped like thin shells cemented to the front of the teeth. Usually, there is only little tooth removed, less tooth structure is lost, so they can serve as alternatives to crowns in certain cases such as aesthetic improvement.
Why have veneers?
To change colour or shape of tooth.
They are ideal in cases where the enamel is worn, uneven, dull, the hard white substance covering the teeth become discoloured, worn, chipped or there is abnormal spacing between teeth.
They are very durable, strong and do not discolour.
More tooth structure can be saved then in case of crowns
The procedure
During the first visit you have a detailed consultation about the shade, appearance you aim to achieve. Your dentist shapes and prepares the front surface of the tooth, by removing a superficial layer(0.5-1mm). Then your dentist will take a mould, and dental technician fabricates the choosen shade of veneers from porcelain. During this period you will wear temporay veneers. On the next appointment your dentist cleans the tooth surfaces and after he made sure that you are satisfied with the natural look of the veneers, he or she permanently cements them on the front of the teeth.
Veneers usually last for 15-20 years if you maintain good oral hygiene and do not bite on hard things.
